Trunk-or-Treat events have children visit cars in parking lots, not walking on streets, to get their Halloween candy.

South Buffalo firefighters plan to bring back a Halloween event designed to keep children off the streets and still go home with bags full of sweets.

The second annual Trunk-or-Treat at 100 Fire Hall Road is schedule for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 30, the same time as the township’s trick-or-treat.

“We didn’t like the kids walking around on the dark road, so we decided to start having (this event),” said fire company President Ed Young. “We felt it was more safe for the kids to come here.”

Between 25 to 30 cars were involved in the inaugural event last year. Some drivers opted to decorate their vehicles.

“I think it was the convenience (that made it successful),” Young said. “We had (participating) cars parked on one side and parking for people to walk their kids around the trunks.”

Admission is free and no registration is necessary. Masks are optional for the outdoor event.

Company Vice President Tom Boroski said he expects more people to participate this year and believes children can get more candy at the fire station than they can walking around town.

“A lot of people buy candy every year, but then they only get one or two kids because it’s too far (to walk) and two hours isn’t enough,” Boroski said.

Firefighters also will have refreshments for sale at the event.

Young said he has a very active department, full of volunteers who like to make residents happy.

“We service the community,” he said. “We do whatever the community needs. We go to the school. We go to the parades. Anything that we can do to help with the community, that’s what we try to do.”

More information about Trunk-or-Treat and other firefighter activities is available on the department’s Facebook page.
