A Greensburg dentist and his late wife, who spent decades volunteering for the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg and ensuring that children in the region received proper dental care, will be honored next month by the Pitt Greensburg Alumni Association.
Dr. Christopher Luccy, DMD, and his late wife, Barbara, will receive the Association’s Volunteer Excellence Award at the Alumni Celebration Dinner Saturday. The award honors alumni who have contributed to the overall success of both the alumni association and the University it represents.
Luccy, who later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School and completed a residency in pediatric dentistry, and his wife met as students at Pitt-Greensburg 55 years ago and have never forgotten their alma mater. She graduated from Pitt’s School of Nursing and later was an integral part of his pediatric dentistry practice.
He has served as a member of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors since 2016, was named the 2013 Alumnus of Distinction for his professional career achievements and currently chairs the Professional Development Committee, which plans events for both students and alumni. In Oct. 2019, the Luccys hosted Dick Groat Day at Totteridge Golf Course in recognition of Groat’s contributions to Pitt Athletic.
“The Volunteer Excellence Award is special because it is recognition from our peers,” Luccy said. “Barbara and I have always been very proud to be Pitt alumni. Working with students, faculty, and especially the staff, at Pitt-Greensburg has been very special. It has provided the opportunity to continue sharing knowledge and experience and to see the benefits of our efforts. I dearly miss my ‘better half,’ but she is always with me in spirit.”
Campus officials said plans are underway to name a space in the new Life Sciences Building, currently under construction, in honor of Barbara Luccy, who died in December 2019.
