Only days after the end of the regular season, West Virginia is already planning for 2022.

WVU athletic director Shane Lyons announced Wednesday six home dates, plus the renewal of the Backyard Brawl with Pitt, on the 2022 football schedule.

The season opens Sept. 3 at Heinz Field with the 105th playing of the West Virginia/Pitt rivalry, the longest-running series in WVU history. It will be the first time the teams have played since the Mountaineers defeated the Panthers, 21-20, in 2011, on the eve of the breakup of the Big East.

It’s also the first Backyard Brawl at Heinz Field since a 35-10 WVU victory in 2010. Pitt owns a 61-40-3 edge in the series. The Panthers’ most recent victory was 19-15 in 2008.

WVU also visits Virginia Tech on Sept. 24 in the Battle for the Black Diamond Trophy, the 53rd meeting between the schools.

West Virginia will have six home dates, including five in the Big 12 and a nonconference meeting with Towson on Sept. 17.

“I know our fans will be excited to have two rivalry games that they can drive to at Pitt and Virginia Tech,” Lyons said in a statement.

West Virginia’s Big 12 home dates are Kansas (Sept. 10), Baylor (Thursday, Oct. 13), TCU (Oct. 29, homecoming), Oklahoma (Nov. 12) and Kansas State (Nov. 19). Road conference games are Texas (Oct. 1), Texas Tech (Oct. 22), Iowa State (Nov. 5) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 26).

“One of the best rivalries in college football returns with the Backyard Brawl at Pitt,” coach Neal Brown said in a statement. He added that WVU’s nonconference schedule is “one of the strongest in the country.”
