Westmoreland County campus clippings: Seton Hill's Marc Marizzaldi earns 700th career win
What a way to close out a spring break trip.
Seton Hill baseball brushed past Florida Southern, 3-1, to give longtime coach Marc Marizzaldi his 700th career win.
Grad shortstop Owen Sabol (Norwin) had two hits, senior pitcher Aidan Layton earned the win and struck out eight and junior closer Christian Zilli (Hempfield) picked up another save for the Griffins (9-5).
Marizzaldi, in his 20th season, is now 700-353-1. He has three PSAC titles, multiple trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament and guided the team to an Atlantic Regional championship last year.
Baseball
Grove City: Senior second baseman Lucca Baccari (Penn-Trafford) delivered an RBI single, but the Wolverines dropped an 8-3 decision against Oberlin.
Baccari delivered a run-scoring single in a 4-3 victory over Penn State DuBois to complete a two-game sweep.
Mercyhurst: Junior center fielder Eric Chorba (Norwin) went 2 for 3 with two runs and a walk as the Lakers defeated Salem, 6-1.
He added two runs and an RBI in a 7-6 loss in the second game of the doubleheader.
Pitt: Sophomore shortstop Jake Kendro (Norwin) extended his hitting streak to six games and scored a run as the Panthers fell to No. 16 North Carolina, 2-1.
Kendro blasted his third homer of the year — off the scoreboard in Chapel Hill — as the Panthers fell to North Carolina in extra innings 6-5.
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Hunter Gideons went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and sophomore Ben Aftanas (Valley) doubled and drove in two in a 7-4 win over John Carroll in Auburndale, Fla.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats had to earn their first win of the season in a patience-testing marathon of a game in Davenport, Fla.
In a game that lasted 4 hours, 27 minutes, the Bearcats outlasted Anna Maria, 11-10, in 10 innings.
Senior Matthew Lockwich drew a bases-loaded walk to score freshman Jacob Auld (Norwin) for the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
SVC (1-5) trailed by three runs twice but rallied. The teams combined to throw 14 pitchers.
Senior Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) doubled and drove in four runs, and Lockwich and junior L.J. Evans had three RBIs apiece.
Auld, junior Dalton Nicklow and junior Kyle Belmont scored two runs each for the Bearcats, who had only five hits.
Westmoreland County Community College: The Wolfpack took care of Penn State New Kensington, 12-1, to give longtime coach Mike Draghi a milestone.
The result marked the 750th win of Draghi’s career.
The only coach in the history of the program, Draghi has guided the team for more than three decades.
Softball
Marist: Grad pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) struck out eight and did not walk a batter in a complete-game four-hitter as the Foxes defeated Presbyterian, 2-0.
Myers moved to 5-2 on the season.
Ohio: Junior catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) was hitting .323 with four doubles, a triple, a home run, 11 RBIs and 14 runs through 23 games.
Hoffner has started every game and was leading the team in walks with 11.
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats picked up a two-game sweep in Kissimee, Fla., defeating New England, 8-6, and Saint Mary’s, 9-3.
In the first game, senior Madison Stonbraker went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs then added three hits and three more RBIs in the second game.
Junior Kylie Karns (Burrell) added two hits, and senior Megan Toth (Greensburg Salem) scored three times against Saint Mary’s for the Bobcats (3-1).
Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore pitcher Mia Smith (Penn-Trafford) tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts as the Mountain Cats picked up their first of the season, 4-3 over Southern Connecticut State.
Freshman Izzy DePalma (Derry) drove in a run, and freshman pinch-runner Krista Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) scored for UPJ (1-5).
Seton Hill: The Griffins ended their road trip to Auburndale, Fla., with a pair of wins to move to 11-5.
They rolled past Northwood, 14-4, then completed The Spring Games with a 5-2 victory against Lynn.
In the first win, senior Nina Grandey went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs, junior Brooklyn Fukishima went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and junior Grace Paredes and senior Mackenzie Zang had two hits apiece.
Senior Lauren Dellett picked up her fifth win of the season as she truck out six and gave up three earned runs.
Against Lynn, Grandey went 3 for 3 with a home run, and Paredes also homered as senior Logan Hartman moved to 6-2 with a complete game in the circle.
Grandey was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.
Westminster: Junior outfielder Sydney Lokay (Norwin) went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run as the Titans defeated Neumann, 9-1, in five innings.
Lokay had an RBI single in a 4-1 loss to Wittenberg.
Men’s volleyball
Penn State: Grad student outside hitter John Kerr (Derry) was namd the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
He played well for the Nittany Lions against three nationally ranked opponents.
He had 13 kills in a 3-1 win over CSUN, then went for 21 kills, four digs and two blocks against USC, then tallied 19 kills and five digs against UCLA.
Men’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson: Junior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) had seven ground balls and caused two turnovers in a 12-7 loss to Juniata.
Hockey
Saint Vincent: Jacob Holtman became the 15th player in program history to reach 100 career points. He accomplished the milestone in the final game of the season, a 9-5 win over Colby College in the ACHA D3 National Tournament.
The Bearcats won the College Hockey East championship for the first time.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats broke into the top-25 national rankings for the first time.
SVC (62-11) were among the others receiving votes before finally earning the No. 25 spot in the National Tenpin Coaches Association’s all-division coaches poll.
The Bearcats last month won the Br. Pat Lacey, O.S.B. Memorial Tournament and the Unicorn Invitational.
They have the No. 1 seed in the AMCC Championships set for March 22-23, at Pines Plaza Lanes in Pittsburgh.
