Westmoreland County campus clippings: Saint Vincent soccer teams post shutouts under the lights
Saint Vincent’s soccer teams should play under the lights more often.
The women’s team had six players score goals in an 8-0 victory over Thiel, and the Bearcats men tied Thiel, 0-0, last Tuesday night at UPMC Field.
It was a historic doubleheader for SVC, which hosted night soccer for the first time.
Senior Tanisha Grewal and sophomore Brooke Garman each scored twice, and freshmen Emma Koller, Jordan Kirkwood (Valley), Addie Fisher and Lexi Durkacs scored for the women (8-3-2, 4-1-1 PAC), who outshot the Tomcats, 35-3, and stretched their unbeaten streak to six games.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kameron Rock made four saves for the SVC men (6-6-2, 2-2-2).
Koller was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week, while junior goalkeeper Madison Arnold earned PAC Defensive Player ofthe Week honors.
Women’s soccer
Carlow: Four local players are seeing playing time for the Celtics.
They are senior Amber Biros (Yough), sophomore Hannah Biros (Yough), freshman Hannah Wright (Yough) and sophomore Lyndsey Szekely (Greensburg Central Catholic).
Hannah Biros is the lone offensive player in the group. Szekely is a goalkeeper.
Florida Gulf Coast: Junior Katelyn Kaufman (Norwin) had a goal and an assist this season over 16 games, including 15 she has started.
Pitt-Greensburg: UPG erupted for six second-half goals and blanked Hilbert, 6-0, for a fourth straight victory.
Sophomore Maya Wertelet scored her team-leading 11th goal, and junior Julia Rowe, sophomore Megan Hickey, freshman Paige Inman and freshman Maggie Knorr also scored for the Bobcats (9-5-1, 5-0-1).
Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Kepner made three saves in the shutout.
Senior Nylah Pannebaker was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week.
Slippery Rock: Senior Sydney Patrick (Hempfield) had a goal and an assist for the Rock in a 4-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown. She tied her career high with five goals in a season.
Robert Morris: Through 15 games, sophomore Malia Kearns (Penn-Trafford) had seven goals and three assists for a 17-point total that ranked second on the team.
Westminster: Junior Mackenzie Powell (Penn-Trafford) had an assist in a 2-1 victory over Geneva. The Titans improved to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the PAC.
Youngstown State: Sophomore defender Emma Rigone (Norwin) scored her first collegiate goal as the Penguins (6-6-3, 2-4-2) played to a 1-1 draw with Milwaukee in a Horizon League match.
Rigone delivered a header into the cage off a corner kick from another local player, senior Justine Appolonia (Yough), to make it 1-0.
Men’s soccer
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Jake Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) had his team’s only goal, on a penalty kick, in a 4-1 loss to Seton Hill. It was his third goal of the season.
Sophomore AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) had four saves in the loss. Visco added a career-high nine saves in a 2-0 loss to Mercyhurst.
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Zander Plizga converted a penalty kick, and junior Vinny Treonze and freshman Roman Milani also scored goals as UPG (7-4-2, 4-1-1) won at Hilbert (N.Y.), 3-1, in an AMCC game.
Plizga was named the AMCC Offensive Player of the Week.
Football
Duquesne: Junior linebacker Gianni Rizzo (Norwin) had four tackles, one for loss, as the Dukes dumped Central Connecticut State, 44-20.
Grove City: Sophomore linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) and senior cornerback Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) combined for nine tackles as the Wolverines handled Allegheny, 31-7.
Allegheny senior Declan O’Brien (Norwin), the nation’s leading receiver, had eight receptions for 89 yards.
Mercyhurst: Senior linebacker Dillon Ferretti (Hempfield) made six tackles as the Lakers (2-5, 1-3 PSAC) rallied past Clarion, 36-35.
Senior defensive lineman Max Malis (Derry) added a tackle for loss, and freshman Eli Binakonsky (Hempfield) also saw playing time for the Lakers, who scored with five seconds left to clip the Golden Eagles.
St. Francis (Pa.): Redshirt junior receiver Aaron Tutino (Ligonier Valley) picked a good night to get into the end zone again.
In a game broadcast nationally by CBS Sports Network, Tutino pulled in a 4-yard touchdown in a 31-7 victory over visiting Wagner.
For the year, Tutino has eight receptions for 69 yards and two scores. He has played in four games for the Red Flash (2-4, 2-1 NEC).
Waynesburg: Grad student running back Justin Flack (Derry) rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and also caught a scoring pass, and sophomore wide receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) had three catches for 33 yards and a TD as the Yellow Jackets blanked Saint Vincent, 24-0.
Freshman Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) had five tackles in the loss.
