Westmoreland County campus clippings: Penn-Trafford grads spark Grove City defense
A pair of Penn-Trafford grads continue to power No. 22 Grove City’s defense.
Senior cornerback Gabe Dunlap and sophomore linebacker Jack Jollie tied a team high with seven tackles in a 49-0 win over Saint Vincent.
Dunlap added an interception and a 40-yard punt return touchdown, and Jollie picked up a sack and a fumble recovery for GCC, which is 8-0 for the first time in program history.
It was the third straight shutout loss for Saint Vincent, which saw junior Wiley Purry make a game-high 14 tackles.
Austin Wells had nine receptions for 111 yards for the Bearcats.
Dunlap was lauded for his performance as he was named the PAC Special Teams Player of the Week, and earned a spot in the D3football.com Team of the Week.
Football
Edinboro: Junior linebacker CJ Waldier (Yough) had a team-high 13 tackles but the Fighting Scots fell to Clarion, 34-20. Junior safety Toby Cline (Jeannette) added five stops in the loss. Waldier, who has three double-digit tackle games this season, leads the team with 79 tackles.
Mercyhurst: Grad running back Dustin Shoaf (Yough) ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries but the Lakers lost to Gannon, 31-28.
Seton Hill: Redshirt freshman Hayden Teska (Greensburg Salem) threw for 259 yards (14 for 22) and three touchdowns, redshirt sophomore Kyron Craggette ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and redshirt senior Pratt Monte had a game-high 11 tackles as the Griffins (3-5, 2-3 PSAC) dumped IUP, 35-28. It was the Griffins’ first win over IUP. Freshman Cody Rubrecht (Greensburg Salem) has a TD catch in the the team’s second victory in three weeks. Craggette, who accounted for 186 total yards, was named the PSAC West co-offensive athlete of the week.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) tied a game high with 12 tackles as the Presidents fell to Carnegie Mellon, 35-14.
William & Mary: Senior Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) had seven tackles and a pass breakup in the Tribe’s 34-24 loss to Towson.
Women’s volleyball
Chatham: Senior Delaney O’Shea (Hempfield), a right-side hitter, had 84 kills in 16 matches for the Cougars’ attack.
Saint Vincent: Junior Kaelyn Staples had 14 kills and seven service aces, senior Luciana Polk added 13 kills and 19 digs, and freshman Madie Eagler produced 40 assists as the Bearcats defeated Waynesburg, 3-1, on senior day.
Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: Postseason accolades found the Bobcats after they captured their third consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship. Senior Emily Ruhlman won her fourth straight player of the year award, while Doug Smeltzer reached the same streak in coach-of-the-year honors. Sophomore Eden Richey was an all-conference second-team selection for No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. UPG will play in the NCAA Division III Tournament in May.
Men’s swimming
Saint Vincent: Freshman Liam Randolph (Hempfield) won four events in his college debut, against Mount Union. He took the 50-yard breaststroke (27.87 seconds), 100 breaststroke (1 minute, 92 seconds), 100 individual medley (56.47), and swam a leg of the 200 medley relay (1:38.68) with a 27.13-second leg.
Men’s golf
Cal (Pa.): Senior Aidan Bushey (Derry) tied for 22nd at 24-over 240 (81-80-79) at the PSAC Championship.
Grove City: Junior Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) finished 23rd in the PAC Fall Championships at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio. Kimmich followed an 85 with a second-round 79. GCC finished third in the team standings.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Cyrus Parvizi was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year. He also was selected to the All-AMCC First Team. His freshman teammate, Anthony Treonze, made the second team. Parvizi, who had a team-best 79.44 scoring average, won the Saint Vincent Bearcat Invitational.
Women’s golf
Seton Hill: Sophomore Jessica Bushik (Norwin) recorded a hole-in-one during the final round of the Clarion Fall Invitational. She aced the 150-yard, par-3 No. 12 hole at Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville.
Men’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) took 24th to earn second-team all-conference honors at the PSAC Championships in Bloomsburg. His time was 27 minutes, 23 seconds.
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Ethan Barrick was named the AMCC Athlete of the Week for the third time this fall. He broke the course 5K record at the La Roche Invitational while earning his third win of the season, with a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds.
Saint Vincent: Senior Tim Patterson was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Runner of the Week after his second-place finish at the Rowan Interregional Border Battle. He finished the 267-runner, 8K race in 24 minutes, 56 seconds.
Women’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Senior Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) earned All-PSAC First Team honors after a sixth-place finish at the conference championships. She completed the race in 23 minutes, 12.3 seconds. Anderson has been an All-PSAC honoree three times in her career.
Point Park: Senior Allison Plassio (Norwin) was named the River State Conference Runner of the Week.
She was the conference’s top finisher at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge Maroon Race as she placed 19th out of 190 runners in a time of 19 minutes, 6 seconds. The time is a personal record.
Women’s basketball
Seton Hill: Krystal Gibbs was named an assistant to first-year head coach Maeve Gallagher. Gibbs spent the last 10 years coaching the Elizabeth Forward girls team.
