Westmoreland County campus clippings: Belle Vernon grad tops podium for Duquesne track

Duquesne senior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon) won the 400-meter run in 55.45 seconds and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay (3:50.25) at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational at George Mason.

Senior Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) added a third-place finish in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches), while senior Emily Brozeski (Norwin) took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.70).

Women’s track & field

Ohio Northern: Freshman Ashley Baker (Derry) finished in third place in the triple jump at the Tiffelberg Open with a mark of 9.87 meters.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Junior Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) tied for first place at the Geneva Spring Invitational at Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver, carding a 77. A scorecard playoff officially moved him into second place.

John Carroll: Freshman Wade Boyle (Greensburg Central Catholic) shot a 72 to tie for eighth at the Ohio Athletic Conference Spring Preview at River Greens in West Lafayette, Ohio.

A day later, he played in the Muskingum Zanesville Invitational and finished second with an even-par 140 (71-69) at Eaglesticks Golf Club. JCU won the team title by a stroke over Otterbein.

Notre Dame: Grad student Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) finished tied for fourth with a three-round total of 3-over-par 216 at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Jackson carded an impressive 5-under 66 in the second round, making five birdies and an eagle. The Fighting Irish finished second overall.

Saint Vincent: Senior Brevin Urso shot an even-par 70 for a two-shot victory at the Thiel Invitational in Sharon. SVC finished second in the team standings.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Cade Patterson (Penn-Trafford) tied for 13th with a 78 at the Alvernia Spring Invitational at Ledge Rock Golf Club in Mohnton. The event was shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather.

Women’s golf

Saint Vincent: Freshman Lucy Brayton was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. She finished third at the Grove City Invitational with a career-low 83.

Westminster: Sophomore Liv Kana (Greensburg Central Catholic) finished in 11th place with a 93 at the Grove City College Spring Invitational. The Wolverines won the team title.

Women’s lacrosse

Grove City: Freshman attacker Gwen Shilling (Franklin Regional) delivered a career-high six goals, including five in the first quarter, as the Wolverines defeated Saint Vincent, 20-0. Shilling added two goals and assist in an 18-3 win against Bethany. She was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Saint Vincent: Sophomores Bailey Nicely and Carolina Walters (Latrobe) each scored five goals, and Madison Weber added four scores to pace the Bearcats (2-6, 1-2 PAC) to a 20-11 win over Waynesburg.

In other program news, longtime coach Jym Walters announced he will step down at the end of the season. Walters, in charge of the Bearcats since 2012, has a career record of 106-78.

Walters, who will stay on as associate director of campus life/outdoor recreation and continue as an assistant women’s tennis coach, also was the field hockey coach at the college from 2006-11 and the women’s tennis ciach from 2014-18.

Seton Hill: Redshirt junior Skylar Orlowski was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. She had 11 goals and five assists over two wins for the Griffins. Her seven goals against Gannon were a career high.

Men’s track & field

Cal (Pa.): Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) reached a conference-qualifying mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.61 at the 58th annual Colonial Relays at William & Mary.

Grove City: Senior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) helped the 400-meter relay to a fourth-place finish at the Dave Labor Invitational.

Saint Vincent: Senior Tim Patterson won the 5K race at the Dave Labor Invitational in Slippery Rock with a time of 15 minutes, 5.6 seconds, winning by four full seconds.

Westminster: Grad student Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) was named the PAC Athlete of the Week. Beard took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.38 seconds at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. His time is No. 1 in the conference. Beard took fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99 seconds at the Slippery Rock Invitational. He was also part of the 400-meter relay that took second place (43.16).

Men’s tennis

Saint Vincent: Freshman Josh Havrilla (Latrobe) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. He went 3-0 over a pair of wins for the Bearcats.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Sophomore Wade Brunelle had five goals and an assist for a six-point afternoon, and junior Braedyn Lockyer added a hat trick as the Griffins (7-3, 4-1 GMAC) defeated Malone, 26-14.

Thiel: Senior John Robbins contributed an assist but the Tomcats fell to Allegheny, 23-9.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Nate Petrarco (Norwin) scored two goals and had four assists, while sophomore Braden Petrarco (Norwin) added one goal, and junior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) posted eight ground balls and four caused turnovers in a 17-9 victory over Bethany. Hopkins was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Softball

Marist: Grad student Kiley Myers (Latrobe) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season. Myers had 12 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP over 15 innings last week.

Transfer portal

Basketball player Landon Butler (Latrobe) is leaving one Division II school for another as he exits Montevallo (Ala.) to play at Coker (S.C.).

Butler, a 6-foot-4 freshman, played in 28 games last season, starting seven, while averaging 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds over 19.2 minutes a game for Montevallo.
