Westmoreland campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg’s Michalek earns all-region honors

Pitt-Greensburg senior Tiffany Michalek capped another outstanding season for the Bobcats as she was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team.

Michalek led the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in goals (22), assists (10), points (54) and shots (59) as UPG returned to the conference championship for the second year in a row.

She finished her career with 46 goals and 113 points, both marks that rank second all time at UPG.

Westminster: Freshman forward Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III All-Region VII Third Team. Horvath broke onto the scene with a league-best 11 assists while she tied for second with 33 points and third in goals (11).

Wrestling

Gannon: Senior 125-pounder Jacob Dunlop (Belle Vernon) picked up a victory in a 30-9 loss to Buffalo to improve to 6-3 for the season.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) took eighth place at 174 pounds at the Messiah University Invite.

Football

Seton Hill: Junior cornerback Damonte Pratt was named to the D2 Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Super Region I Second Team. Pratt set a school record with seven interceptions and had 29 tackles and seven pass breakups.

He is the first Griffins player to earn all-region honors since Ardell Brown in 2018.

Thiel: Saint Vincent grad Andrew Geisler was named the Tomcats’ interim head coach. He was a defensive assistant for two years at Thiel after assistant positions at Cornell, Cal (Pa.) and Shady Side Academy.

He was a defensive standout at Saint Vincent.

Villanova: Grad student tight end Todd Summers (Franklin Regional) had three catches for 23 yards as the Wildcats defeated Holy Cross, 21-16, in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs.

Summers has 24 receptions for 282 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Women’s swimming

Gannon: Redshirt freshman Francesca Nemetz (Hempfield) took first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2 minutes, 16.15 seconds in a 197-103 loss to IUP.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Maddy Cassidy (Greensburg Salem) was named the PAC Rookie of the Week after she won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events in the Bearcats’ 183-98 victory over Washington & Jefferson. Her times were 1:15.96 (100) and 2:42.08 (200).

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Amanda Graves (Penn-Trafford) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 4.49 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 1:03.66 as the Presidents fell to Saint Vincent, 183-98.

Westminster: Junior Baylee Horvath (Franklin Regional) swam a leg of the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1 minute, 42.12 seconds at the Wooster Invitational.

Women’s indoor track and field

Clarion: Junior Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) put together a career performance at the Mike Kowal Multi meet, scoring 3,076 points in the pentathlon. Uncapher finished fourth overall with this breakdown: a tie for first in the high jump (1.63 meters), fourth in 60-meter hurdles (10.11 seconds), fourth in shot put (9.32 meters), fourth in long jump (4.89 meters), and third in 800 meters (2 minutes, 37.86 seconds).

The scoring total ranks fourth in program history.

Men’s indoor track and field

Grove City: Freshman Joe Whipkey (Penn-Trafford) took 15th place in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 40.44 seconds at the Youngstown State IceBreaker Meet. The time was second among all Division III runners.
