When Mike Shanahan was at Pitt, he played in the Big East.
Now, he will coach in the Big Ten.
Shanahan, a former Norwin standout wide receiver who played tight end in college, is following head coach Curt Cignetti to Indiana. Shanahan, 34, will be the Hoosiers’ offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
He and Cignetti come to Bloomington from James Madison, where they coached together for two seasons. The 2023 James Madison offense led the Sun Belt Conference in total offense during the regular season, averaging 430.2 yards a game.
After college, he spent time in training camps with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also played for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
At Pitt, Shanahan was a two-time captain and had 159 receptions for 2,276 yards, marks that rank in the top 10 in Panthers history. Pitt went to four straight bowl games with him on the roster.
