West Virginia athletics plans to honor the late Jerry West throughout the 2024-25 school year.

The greatest Mountaineer in history was the inspiration for the NBA logo and left behind a legacy few could match. He played at WVU from 1957-60 before playing 14 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers and earning 12 All-NBA awards.

West died June 12 at age 86.

“Through his lifetime of commitment to West Virginia University and its academic and athletic mission, the great Jerry West has touched the lives of thousands of our student-athletes and that’s why every team will honor him this season,” vice president and director of athletics Wren Baker said in a statement. “He’s the greatest Mountaineer ever. His outstanding legacy is large, and he will always be beloved, remembered and in the hearts of all West Virginians.”

The highlight of the tribute will be an honorary weekend men’s basketball game, which will feature several commemorative items, including a miniature replica of the Jerry West statue that is outside of the WVU coliseum.

In the honorary game, the men’s basketball team will sport throwback uniforms from when West played. They are like the uniforms the team played in during the “100 years of Mountaineer basketball” celebration game in 2004.

The game date, time and opponent will be revealed at a later date.

The department also said all 18 of WVU’s varsity sports teams will honor West with a logo depicting his No. 44 on their uniform, warm-up or helmet for the year, along with the logo being present on the coliseum’s basketball court and in all men’s basketball promotional material.

Lastly, all teams will post social media videos honoring West.
