On the heels of the Big 12 board of directors’ announcement to proceed with the fall sports seasons, West Virginia on Wednesday morning announced its updated 2020 football schedule.

“When the Big 12 announced a revised 10-game season, we knew that the schedule would change and there would be some flexibility built in to handle any covid-19 disruptions,” said Shane Lyons, WVU’s director of intercollegiate athletics, in a release announcing the schedule.

“This new schedule provides us with the nine league games, the one nonconference date and the ability to plan accordingly.”

The Mountaineers will have a 10-game schedule and play six of their games at home, beginning with a Sept. 12 nonconference game against Eastern Kentucky.

Each Big 12 school will play the other nine conference members, and after an open date Sept. 19, WVU will kick off its conference schedule Sept. 26 at Oklahoma State.

In addition to the game against Eastern Kentucky, WVU will play home conference games against Baylor (Oct. 3), Kansas (Oct. 17), Kansas State (Oct. 31), TCU (Nov. 14) and Oklahoma (Nov. 28).

All games will be Saturdays, and the Mountaineers have additional open dates Oct. 10 and Nov. 21.

As with previous seasons, the top two finishers in the regular-season standings will compete for the conference title. This year’s title game is set for Dec. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

WVU is hoping for better fortunes in 2020 after going 5-7 overall last fall and 3-6 in the Big 12.

The times for each game and a television schedule have not been announced. All of the dates are subject to change.

WVU athletic officials also said they continue to work with local and state authorities about a possible plan to have fans in attendance at Milan Puskar Stadium. Information on tickets, when released, will be available at WVUsports.com.
