West Virginia football player tests positive for covid-19

A West Virginia University football player has tested positive for covid-19.

On Monday, the WVU athletic department announced a Mountaineer football player contracted the virus that has kept many athletic teams separated for the past three months. The player will enter a self-isolation period for the next 14 days.

Voluntary workouts for WVU football players who tested negative for the coronavirus began Monday. As part of the department’s health and safety protocol, players who could have been exposed to the virus were identified by contact tracing procedures. They will be assigned to a self-quarantine, as well.

According to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, there were 2,298 covid-19 cases in West Virginia as of Monday. There also were only 18 current active cases in Monongalia County, which is where West Virginia’s campus is located.
