West Miffin's Logan Cooley selected to United States' team for IIHF World Junior Championship
Forward Logan Cooley, a native of West Mifflin, was selected to play for the United States’ team in the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship tournament later this month.
USA Hockey announced the roster of 25 players on Friday evening.
It marks the second time Cooley has been selected for the United States in this tournament.
Last December, Cooley was named to the team though the tournament was postponed until this past August due to the pandemic.
Appearing in five games, Cooley scored six points (two goals, six assists) as the United States finished the tournament in fifth place.
This past July, Cooley was selected third overall in the NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. That was the highest a player from Western Pennsylvania has ever been selected in the NHL Draft. He is an alumnus of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth program.
Cooley, 18, is currently a freshman at the University of Minnesota. In 19 NCAA games this season, he has 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists).
The upcoming IIHF World Junior Tournament will be staged in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Play for the United States opens with a preliminary round game against Latvia at the Avenir Centre in Moncton on Dec. 26 at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
