Tim Benz and Mark Madden return for this week’s edition of “Unfiltered” on TribLive’s Facebook page to talk Penguins hockey, the Steelers’ future, Super Bowl and all things Pittsburgh sports.
As the Penguins search for their next general manager, Madden thinks they are looking for a ready-made guy who can win now. He says that the organization thinks the window to win is still open, but really, “The window is not still open. What would give anyone that idea? They haven’t won a playoff series since 2018.”
Madden says the window closed when the Penguins lost their playoff series against the Washington Capitals in 2018. And he thinks that’s when the team should have traded Evgeni Malkin.
Madden shares who he thinks the team is looking at and also says what he would do: ride out the season and see who is available then.
The guys also talk about the Penguins’ recent wins and how the players have been playing. They look at the goaltending of Tristan Jarry and how he compares to Matt Murray.
Benz and Madden talk about the Steelers’ woeful finish to the season – and it goes deeper than that. Madden details how they have collapsed in each of the last three seasons, haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, have only three playoff wins in the last decade, a quarterback who is falling off, and more.
Madden says it’s going to be worse next season.
