When it comes to Penn State wrestling during Cael Sanderson’s time in State College, the numbers associated with the Nittany Lions’ program are dizzying.

Penn State left Philadelphia last March with its 12th NCAA team title, 10 All-Americans in 10 weight classes and a pair of champions — five-timer Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink.

There has not been a drop-off this season.

Not even close.

No. 1 Penn State is 11-0, having surrendered just 19 team points in those matches.

The Lions have seven shutouts, four against Big Ten foes.

They eviscerated proud Iowa’s program in Iowa City earlier this month, winning 32-3.

No. 6 Nebraska (9-5, 2-2) is next for PSU on Friday night at Bryce Jordan Center. The Cornhuskers have the slimmest of chances to end the Lions’ 82-match winning streak.

Sanderson was asked Wednesday about Penn State wrestling’s “process” when it comes to achieving success, dealing with success and how his wrestlers are able to maintain their focus.

“Well, I think saying focus on the process, too, I think that means different things to different people,” Sanderson said. “And even if you ask the kids on your team, ‘Hey, what does this mean?’ You’re gonna get a different answer from each kid. And I think it means different things to each individual, and the way they compete.

“But for us as a staff, we just are, you know, focused on just something we feel is more exciting than just trying to win our next match.”

More exciting than winning?

That’s what the man said.

“That’s the process for us,” Sanderson said. “(It) is, obviously, the details that make that possible. Little things like moving your feet, or whatever it is.

“I think we don’t change because we continue to focus on what we value, and that’s just being a part of a program that stands for something maybe a little different, and that’s what’s important to us.

“Obviously, if you do that and you focus on those things, results will come or they won’t.

“And if they don’t, well, then you make adjustments.”
