U mad, bro?: While Steelers look good after preseason opener, there’s still plenty to make Pittsburgh sports fans angry

When the Pittsburgh Steelers win their first preseason game, the first-team offense looks smooth, the defense makes a few plays, and none of the stars get hurt, there is very little to complain about.
Because we had plenty of angst and agitation from readers this week, but very little of it was Steelers specific.
Eh, it’s preseason for the readers too.
Then again, it’s getting close to the end of the regular season for the Pirates. And that’s where “U mad, bro?” always serves a purpose.
Apparently, last week’s “U mad, bro?” actually did make this guy mad.
Yes. Any time I see an “article” from Benz I get mad. Imagine an article where he reports instead of editorializes

Yes. And imagine a Twitter troll who understands that a columnist’s job is to give opinions and not just report facts.
Matt emailed about Kevin Brown, the Baltimore Orioles broadcaster who was suspended by the team for a seemingly mundane game-open referencing the franchise’s previous problems playing at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay.
“Kevin Brown and Geoff Arnold are two of the most vanilla, milk toast (sic), boring sports announcers I’ve ever heard. I’ve got to believe that Brown’s most recent diatribe was simply the tipping point for John Angelos. The Orioles management has royally screwed up on its media corp ever since they got rid of John Miller and the revolving door of radio and TV sportscasters ever since. However, in this instance I’ve got to agree with them. Kevin Brown is awful and shouldn’t even be calling games in A-ball or NCAA D3.”
Matt, you called that a “diatribe”? Are you kidding? How was that a “diatribe”? He read stats. There was no opinion to it at all. None.
How can you expect those broadcasters to be anything but “milk toast” if the bar for reprisal and punishment over perceived criticism is so remarkably low?
Your opinion of them being boring has nothing to do with whether or not Angelos was out of line. Maybe those guys are boring. I really don’t know. But I do know that punishment was insane.

Andy is ticked off about college athletics and conference hopping.
“Many people are hurt over this. The Big 10 has only money in mind with no regard to social issues and fall out. The irony is that the school/conference administrators who preach fairness, equality, etc., and left propaganda have turned into capitalists with no regard for their lesser peers. The Big 10 is the biggest culprit.”
They preen and posture about the mental health of student athletes, the importance of the academic experience, and equality of efforts to grow the games of all the sports for their institutions.
Yet, all the while, they are stretching the non-revenue sports’ travel expenses, support staff and operational budgets to the point of snapping.
All in the name of football dollars.
So I wouldn’t say “irony,” Andy. I’d actually say “hypocrisy.”
Pete is angry with Pirates manager Derek Shelton.
“The management team are morons, led by the manager. Why is (Henry) Davis in right field?? Once again, he has no idea how to manage to win. He thinks it is an instructional league, or Indianapolis.”
Pete, I hate to break it to you, it’s been Indianapolis around here for most of the last 30 years.
As far as Davis playing right field goes, c’mon. You have to know that’s not Derek Shelton’s call. If general manager Ben Cherington and the rest of the front office wanted Davis catching, he’d be catching.
This isn’t a Shelton-driven decision.
Let’s end with this message about the Pirates from a guy named Anthony.
My prediction was 72-76, depending on injuries, etc. Still doable if they can figure out how to score some runs!!!!

I’m not quite sure how to read this, Anthony. If you are saying between 72 and 76 wins is still possible, then, yes. It is. But they’d have to get awfully lucky.
Unfortunately, if you are saying your prediction was 72-76, then that isn’t possible.
Because that’s just 148 games.
And even though MLB has every reason to do so, I’m pretty sure they won’t cancel the Pirates season with 14 games remaining.
If they did, though, then we would all be lucky.
