Pittsburgh Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith watches AP first-team All Pro Miles Killebrew during a punt coverage drill at a 2023 training camp practice at Saint Vincent College.

Here’s a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ specialists entering training camp. TribLive also broke down the offense and defense. Players report to Saint Vincent on Wednesday.

SPECIALISTS

9 CHRIS BOSWELL · 6-2 · 185

The only player on the roster to have been with the Steelers for multiple playoff victories, Boswell bounced back from a subpar 2022 to make 56 of 59 kicks last season. But the Steelers brought in camp competition anyway.

5 CAMERON JOHNSTON · 5-11 · 194

Tired of Pressley Harvin III’s inconsistencies, the Steelers quickly targeted veteran punter Johnston in free agency. The 32-year-old, seven-year NFL veteran agreed to a three-year, $9 million contract to stabilize the Steelers’ punting game.

8 MATTHEW WRIGHT · 5-11 · 174

Back for a fourth tour with the Steelers, the 28-year-old kicker has 24 regular-season games worth of NFL experience. Seven of those (three in 2020, four in 2022) came with the Steelers. He’s made 35 of 37 career field-goal attempts with a long of 59 yards.

46 CHRISTIAN KUNTZ · 6-1 · 228

A product of Chartiers Valley and Duquesne, Kuntz is unchallenged during camp heading in to what will be his fourth season as the Steelers’ long snapper. He has the trust of coordinator Danny Smith.

28 MILES KILLEBREW · 6-2 · 222

Killebrew has a defensive role as a subpackage safety. But he was an All-Pro last season because of special teams, the unit on which he serves as team captain. Mike Tomlin has called Killebrew “the best in the world” at blocking punts.

84 CORDARRELLE PATTERSON· 6-2 ·220

Though he remains listed (in part) as a running back and entered the league 11 years ago as a wide receiver, Patterson’s primary duty will be as a kick returner to take advantage of new rules making the play more frequent.
