It will be known before sunset Sunday if the Pittsburgh Steelers will return to the playoffs.
The NFL announced its Week 18 schedule Monday, and the Steelers drew a 1 p.m. kickoff for their final regular-season game this coming week. They will host the rival Cleveland Browns.
Notably, the two other games that affect the Steelers’ playoff hopes also are in the early-afternoon window: the New England Patriots at the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets at the Miami Dolphins. To make the playoffs, the Steelers need a win coupled with losses (or ties) by the Patriots and Dolphins.
The Steelers game will be broadcast by CBS (KDKA-TV in the Pittsburgh market).
The Steelers (8-8) have won six of their past eight, including Sunday’s 16-13 victory at the Baltimore Ravens. They are gunning for their third consecutive postseason berth.
If the Steelers get in, they will earn the AFC’s seventh and final seed, and open up the following weekend on the road at the Bills, Kansas City Chiefs or Cincinnati Bengals, pending results over the next seven days.
The NFL in recent years has waited until after the games of its penultimate regular-season weekend are played before announcing game times for their final weekend’s schedule of games. This was done to give the high-profile television viewing windows the best possible matchups and to allow for no competitive advantages for teams that might be eliminated pending the results of other games that would finish before their game kicks off.
