Cameron Heyward is about to get a chance to show off his dodgeball skills.

Heyward, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ longtime co-captain, was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster Tuesday. Heyward initially was listed as an alternate at defensive tackle, and he was summoned when Chris Jones became unavailable because his Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the Feb. 12 Super Bowl.

This year, the NFL tweaked the Pro Bowl format so that in lieu of a traditional game there will be a series of skills contests and other activities this weekend in Las Vegas. It will culminate with a flag football game Sunday — but it begins Thursday with what the NFL is calling an “Epic Pro Bowl Dodgeball” tournament.

Steelers named as part of the initial Pro Bowl rosters were safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and outside linebacker T.J. Watt, the latter of whom already had opted out in light of injuries he’d suffered this season.

Heyward, 33, had 10½ sacks, 22 QB hurries, four passes batted down and 74 tackles (39 solo, 14 for loss) this season, his 12th with the Steelers. This is the sixth consecutive season Heyward was named to the Pro Bowl roster.

Heyward was left off of both AP All-Pro teams at defensive tackle after he had been named either first- or second-team All-Pro four of the prior five seasons.
