Running back Anthony McFarland is back for a fourth offseason with the Steelers.

The team’s fourth-round pick in 2020 was signed Thursday to a reserve/future contract, adding him to the 90-man offseason roster. McFarland spent all but one game of this past season on the practice squad. During his lone action, Nov. 28 at the Indianapolis Colts, McFarland had a 14-yard carry among 30 rushing yards on six carries and two catches for 11 yards over 21 offensive snaps played.

It was a small glimpse into what the Steelers thought they were getting when they took McFarland with the 124th overall pick three years ago.

Like McFarland, defensive end Renell Wren is a veteran with NFL regular-season experience who finished this past season on the Steelers practice squad and was signed to a reserve/future contract Thursday.

Inside linebacker Chapelle Russell was a third player signed Thursday. Russell appeared in 16 of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 17 games last season and has 27 games of NFL regular-season experience overall since being a seventh-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
