Spencer Lee begins Olympic quest with early morning rematch
Wrestling fans who want to watch Spencer Lee in his Olympic debut on Peacock will have to set an early morning alarm.
The men’s freestyle competition in the 57 kg and 86 kg weight classes will begin at 5 a.m. today with the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. The semifinals are slated for 12:45 p.m.
The finals are slated for 12:13 p.m. Friday.
Lee, unseeded at 57 kg, will face China’s Wanhao Zou, whom he defeated 10-9 in the Olympic Qualifier last month. Zou, who is seeded sixth, led 6-1 early before Lee rallied.
The Franklin Regional and Iowa graduate has put together a solid six months.
He won the Bill Farrell and Senior Nationals tournaments. In the Olympics Trials, he edged Franklin Regional grad Nico Megaludis and defeated Thomas Gilman twice — 6-3 and by fall. He went 4-0 with three tech falls.
He went 3-0 at the Olympic Last Chance Qualifier in Turkey.
The other American competing this morning is Penn State grad Aaron Brooks (86kg). He’ll face Kazakhstan’s Azamat Dauletbrkov.
