These players stood out Saturday in Pitt’s Blue-Gold Game:
Offense
Quarterback Kenny Pickett
After a tough ending to last season, Pickett used some new techniques taught to him by offensive coordinator Mark Whipple (footwork, etc.) and looked confident in the pocket. He completed 10 of 14 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Tre Tipton
Injected with new enthusiasm and good physical, mental and emotional health, Tipton (Apollo-Ridge) caught both of Pickett’s touchdown passes, including an outstanding over-the-shoulder reception. That was his best of three catches on the day because it required so much concentration.
Wide receiver Shocky Jacques-Louis
The sophomore from Fort Myers, Fla., led the Gold team in receiving yards (51 on three catches, including a 39-yarder from freshman Davis Beville). His speed and 6-foot-frame will serve him well as he gains more experience.
Defense
Strong safety Paris Ford
The sophomore from Steel Valley said he’s more mature this season, and it has helped him make plays and gain confidence. He had seven tackles and a pick, and coach Pat Narduzzi named Ford a starter after the game, a rare declaration four months before the first game.
Linebacker Chase Pine
Lining up at middle linebacker for most of the game, Pine recorded six tackles, second only to Ford’s seven, including a sack and another tackle for a loss. He can play inside or outside and will get plenty of playing time because of his versatility.
Outside linebacker Cam Bright
The sophomore from Cleveland led the Gold team with six tackles, including one for a loss, but he’ll battle Phil Campbell for playing time througout the summer and probably into the season. His speed also could make him a factor in pass coverage.
