The Ottawa Senators signed former Penguins goaltender Matt Murray to a four-year contract with a salary cap hit of $6.25 million on Friday.
Murray, who the Senators acquired in a trade with the Penguins on Wednesday, just completed a three-year contract with a salary cap hit of 3.75 million.
A third-round pick in 2012, Murray, 26, spent parts of five seasons at the Penguins’ starting goaltender and led them to the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017.
Murray never enjoyed the same success following those championships, however, and largely struggled his final three seasons in Pittsburgh. In 2019-20, he was replaced for a time as the team’s starting goaltender by Tristan Jarry before eventually settling into a platoon.
Last season, Murray appeared in 38 games and had a 20-11-5 record, a 2.87 goals against average, .899 save percentage and one shutout.
According to Cap Friendly, Murray’s new contract carries a no-trade clause involving 10 teams.
