The fallout from former West Virginia coach Bob Huggins’ DUI arrest and subsequent resignation affected the Mountaineers’ roster in a significant manner Friday with reports that three veteran players are planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Kerr Kriisa, a transfer from Arizona, and Joe Toussaint, who averaged 9.4 points and 21.3 minutes per game for WVU last season, are looking to leave the school, according to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein. Also, several outlets have reported WVU forward Tre Mitchell is planning to transfer. Mitchell led the team in rebounding (5.5) and was second in scoring (11.7 points) while starting 32 games for the Mountaineers last season.

NCAA rules permit players who enter the transfer portal to return to their team, if that opportunity arises.

Kriisa, one of the top point guards available in the portal this offseason, announced in April that he was planning to transfer to West Virginia from Arizona, where he led the Pac-12 in assists the past two seasons. In that time, he averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 assists. Last season, he led the conference in 3-point shooting percentage (37%).

He helped Arizona to a 57-11 record over the past two seasons, the Pac-12 championship in 2023 and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. During his junior season this year, he averaged 9.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.14 assists per game and tied for the team lead with 83 made 3-pointers (eighth-most in Arizona history).

Toussaint, who will be a fifth-year senior, has scored 792 career points, including three seasons at Iowa and one at WVU. He averaged 9.4 points per game for the Mountaineers last season while playing in all 34 games with one start. He shot 33% from the 3-point line (33 of 101).

Mitchell, a fifth-year senior who played at Elizabeth Forward as a freshman and sophomore in high school, has scored 1,398 career points, with 597 rebounds. He also attended Texas and UMass.

Mitchell graduated from West Virginia last month but has a year of eligibility remaining.
