Former Penguins coaches Michel Therrien, Mike Yeo hired by Flyers

Michel Therrien coached the Penguins from 2005-09.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins coaches Michel Therrien and Mike Yeo will have a reunion in an unexpected location in the fall – behind the bench of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers announced Monday that Therrien and Yeo will be assistants on the staff of new head coach Alain Vigneault.

Yeo was an assistant coach under Therrien in the Penguins organization for parts of six seasons from 2003-09, first for two-plus seasons in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, then the remainder in Pittsburgh until Therrien was fired in 2009.

Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher was an assistant GM for the Penguins for three years during that span.

Yeo has been out of work since the St. Louis Blues fired him in November. Therrien has worked in scouting and media since he was fired by the Montreal Canadiens in 2017.

While appearing at a charity event in Cranberry in December, Therrien said he had a soft spot in his heart for players such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang that he once coached in black and gold.

“That was a special group. You could tell right from the start,” Therrien said. “Because I’m not competing with them, I’m wishing for them to win another Stanley Cup.”

That sentiment is obviously about to change in a big way.

Follow the Pittsburgh Penguins all offseason long.
