Nonprofit business ventures — in athletics or otherwise — need pillars of support to maintain stability. A local one is growing as a result of donations.

Educated Athletes First, the informative start-up endeavor run by former Jeannette star athlete and current Cincinnati Bengals safety Demetrious Cox and his father, Dorsey, has taken shape within the past seven months. On Wednesday, it received a boost: a $2,500 check from the new Planet Fitness in Mt. Pleasant, which launched with a grand opening.

Jeannette youth football coach Michael Penn runs the new Planet Fitness.

Educated Athletes First is designed to help aspiring student-athletes and their parents prepare for what lies ahead in college education and recruiting — “charitable, educational and athletic purposes.”

EAF also has guided tours of colleges, including a recent one at Saint Vincent College.

It also has partnered with the Jeannette School District for a study skills program.
