Sophomore Justin Champagnie was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American on Tuesday, becoming the first Pitt player in 10 years to receive that designation.
The most recent Pitt All-Americans were Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker, who were honorable-mention selections after the 2010-11 season.
West Virginia’s Derek Culver and Miles McBride, who will join their teammates in the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Morehead State, also were named honorable mention All-Americans.
Champagnie, runner-up for ACC Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference pick, is the only major conference player averaging a double-double (18 points, 11.1 rebounds per game). He also recorded an ACC-high 14 double-doubles, including eight games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds and two 20/20 games.
He joined Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) and Caleb Swanigan (Purdue) as the only major conference players in the past 25 seasons with back-to-back 20/20 games.
Champagnie also was chosen Tuesday to the All-District 2 first team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and to the All-District II first team by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Culver and McBride were named to the USBWA first team and WVU coach Bob Huggins was named coach of the year.
McBride leads the Mountaineers (18-9) in scoring at 15.5 points per game and with 127 assists. Culver is averaging 14.6 points and a team-high 9.8 rebounds per game.
