Pile another honor upon Pitt defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who was named a second-team Associated Press preseason All-American on Monday. Kancey, a redshirt junior, also has been named to the preseason All-ACC first team, plus six watch lists for national awards.
Kancey led Pitt with 13 tackles for loss and was second with seven sacks in 2021. At the end of the season, he was a first-team All-ACC selection and third-team All-American choice by the Associated Press.
Joining Kancey on the AP’s preseason All-American team is former teammate Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award last season at Pitt before transferring to USC.
Overall, Pitt is one of 33 schools — seven from the ACC — represented by AP preseason All-Americans, led by Alabama with six, including four first-teamers.
The Crimson Tide, Ohio State and Georgia, who are 1-2-3 in the AP preseason Top 25 poll, had six, five and four players named either first or second team.
Alabama quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, linebacker Will Anderson Jr. and defensive backs Jordan Battle and Eli Ricks are first-team selections. Crimson Tide running back Jahmyr Gibbs, a transfer from Georgia Tech, was named to the second team as an all-purpose player and teammate and guard Emil Ekiyor also was a second-team selection.
Seven players chosen to the teams have transferred in their collegiate careers.
The AP preseason All-America team was selected by a panel of Top 25 poll voters.
