Pitt’s wrestling team suffered a significant blow to its postseason hopes Thursday when coach Keith Gavin announced that redshirt sophomore Jake Wentzel will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Wentzel, a starter at 165 pounds, is 9-6, with a career record of 29-24.
“It’s obviously unfortunate to lose Jake,” Gavin said. “He showed a lot of progress this year and was having a nice season. He has two more years with us so he will focus on his recovery and make sure he comes back stronger.”
Sophomores Curtis Decker or Tommy O’Brien will replace Wentzel at 165 pounds.
No. 16 Pitt will travel to North Carolina this weekend for matches at Gardner-Webb and Davidson on Saturday and No. 8 N.C. State on Sunday.
