Pitt women’s basketball coach Lance White added a fifth new face to the roster Friday when two-time West Virginia Player of the Year Marley Washenitz signed a national letter of intent.
Washenitz, a 5-foot-10 guard, played at Fairmont High School, scoring more than 2,000 points in four years and earning first team all-state honors three times, third team once. Fairmont won a state title during her freshman season and was runner-up the past two years. Fairmont was 92-12 in Washenitz’s time on the varsity.
“Marley’s knowledge of the game and her ability to make everyone around her better will add to what we’re building for the 2022-2023 team,” White said in a statement. “She has a winner’s mentality and a work ethic to match.”
Washenitz averaged a career-high 28.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 6.0 steals, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks during the most recent season. Her junior season statistics were equally impressive: 20.1 points, 10.0 assists, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 steals. She also earned first team all-state honors for the second straight year.
On top of her 2,000 points, she amassed more than 750 rebounds, 500 steals and 475 assists in 104 career games.
Washenitz joins Channise Lewis, Gabby Hutcherson, Avery Strickland and Aislin Malcolm as part of the Panthers’ 2022 signing class. In addition, Pitt returns seven of its eight leading scorers from a season ago.
