Pitt wide receiver Myles Alston (20) catches a pass during their annual NCAA football intrasquad Blue-Gold scrimmage game, Saturday, April 9, 2022, in Pittsburgh.

Myles Alston, who was among a group of young Pitt wide receivers competing for playing time behind three atop the depth chart, announced on his Twitter account Tuesday that he has placed his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

A rising redshirt sophomore, Alston (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) is the second wide receiver in Pitt’s 2021 recruiting class to leave the program. Jaden Bradley transferred to Charlotte. In addition, wide receiver Jaylon Barden, a 2020 recruit, transferred to Georgia Southern.

Alston did not have a senior season at Ocean Lakes (Va.) High School in 2020 because of covid-19 restrictions, but he was rated the No. 9 overall prospect in the Virginian-Pilot Hampton Roads Top 50. He enrolled early in January, 2021, but did not appear in any games that season. He advanced to special teams for the Panthers in 2022, participating in seven games without a catch.

This spring, he was considered one of the top backups to wide receivers Konata Mumpfield, Bub Means and Daejon Reynolds, who top the depth chart after joining the team as transfers at various times in the past year.

Freshmen Izzy Polk and Lamar Seymore, both of whom enrolled in January, and walk-on Jake McConnachie earned praise from coaches and teammates throughout spring drills. Polk caught two passes for 24 yards, Seymore two for 9 and McConnachie one for 24 in the Blue-Gold Game on Saturday.

The loss of Alston, who did not have a catch Saturday, gives coach Pat Narduzzi four available scholarships to offer.
