Pitt men’s soccer to play Kansas City in NCAA Round of 16

Midfielder Arnau Vilamitjan buried a penalty kick in the 45th minute, and the Pitt men’s soccer team made the score hold up for a 1-0 victory over Cornell in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday night at Pitt’s Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The No. 2-seeded Panthers (13-5) played down a man for more than half of the game after junior defender Jackson Gilman was issued a red card in the 40th minute. Junior keeper Cabral Carter earned the shutout.
Pitt advanced to the Round of 16, where it will it host Kansas City (14-4-3) at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Cornell finished its season 13-4-2.
Also in the second round, West Virginia dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 11 Virginia.
Marcus Caldeira scored for the Mountaineers, who finished the season 13-1-7.
Robert Morris (8-6-3) was eliminated in the opening round after a 2-0 loss to Michigan.
In the women’s tournament, Penn State (15-6-3) moved on to the Elite Eight with a 3-1 win over Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Nittany Lions play at North Carolina at 6 p.m. on Friday.
