Pitt coach Keith Gavin finalized his 2020 recruiting class Tuesday when he announced Tyler Badgett, one of the country’s top wrestlers at 152 pounds, signed his letter of intent.

Badgett is ranked No. 8 by FloWrestling and No. 7 by InterMat.

“I chose Pitt because I know the coaches will be there for me on and off the mat,” said Badgett, who attends Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. “I love the direction the program has been going and I know the coaches are going to help me reach my goal of winning national titles.”

Gavin called Badgett “a tough, talented wrestler.”

“We think Tyler has a high ceiling in this sport and we look forward to getting him on campus.”

Badgett (183-34) is a two-time California state runner-up and finished in the top-12 all four years of high school.

He also finished first at the Greco State Championship as a junior, first in freestyle state and Greco Western Regionals as a sophomore and third at freestyle state his freshman year.

Pitt has three members in its recruiting class, including Mick Burnett of Elyria, Ohio, and Brookville’s Colby Whitehill, who are ranked 50th and 81st in FloWrestling’s Senior Big Board.
