Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi reached into the talent-rich state of Texas on Saturday, getting a verbal commitment from safety/outside linebacker Marquan Pope.

Pope, 6-foot-1, 206 pounds, has scholarship offers from Kansas and service academies Army, Navy and Air Force. Unranked by Rivals.com, he also has offers from Liberty, Tulsa and Northern Arizona.

Pope collected 59 tackles and three interceptions last season for Guyer High School in Denton, Texas.

The Panthers’ class of 2022 now numbers seven prospects. Pope joins defensive backs Ryland Gandy of Buford, Ga., and defensive ends Jimmy Scott of Athol Springs, N.Y., and Central Valley’s Sean FitzSimmons.

Kicker Sam Vander Haar of Melbourne, Australia, running back Jordaan Bailey of Tampa, Fla. and wide receiver Addison Copeland III of Buffalo, N.Y., also have committed verbally to Pitt.
