No NCAA Division I school had more athletes spending more hours on community service projects in the first three months of 2021 than Pitt.
The Panthers were rewarded for their efforts with the NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition Award on Thursday afternoon.
All Pitt student-athletes participated in at least one community outreach project during the timeframe. Projects included covid vaccine registration programs, a Children’s Hospital blood drive and food, clothing and toy drives. Panthers athletes also promoted literacy and the importance of reading in a series of videoconferences with and recorded messages for local elementary school students.
“Our coaches, student-athletes and staff continue to make servant leadership a top priority each year, and particularly during challenging times,” athletic director Heather Lyke said in a statement. “It is truly an honor to be recognized by the NCAA for outstanding commitment to helping others.”
Emporia State (Kansas) was the winner in Division II and New Jersey City University won in Division III.
