The Pittsburgh Pirates shut down pitcher JT Brubaker from throwing for five to seven days after team doctors determined he has right shoulder impingement that caused discomfort.

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Brubaker “has some soreness with certain range of motion” but called the prognosis “very encouraging.”

Brubaker and right-handed reliever Duane Underwood Jr. were placed on the 10-day injured list when both were removed from Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs with right shoulder discomfort.

Underwood’s season ended, however, when he was transferred to the 60-day IL on Monday when the Pirates claimed right-hander Connor Overton off waivers from Toronto. Tomczyk said the Pirates are “still learning a little bit more” about Underwood, who underwent imaging testing Wednesday afternoon, but “envision a full recovery.”

Infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis, who injured his right elbow while diving for a ball, is not ready for full throwing but is doing some gripping of the ball and has returned to light hitting.

“He’s responding well,” Tomczyk said, “but he is making steady progress in his return from the injury.”
