The Pittsburgh Pirates placed left-handed pitcher Steven Brault on the 10-day injured list with a recurrent left lat strain and recalled right-hander Connor Overton from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

Brault (0-3, 5.86 ERA) was out from spring training until Aug. 4, and he made his seventh start and pitched two innings Friday against the Washington Nationals. Brault left the game with what Pirates manager Derek Shelton described as “tightness” in his throwing arm.

Overton, 28, was claimed off waivers from Toronto on Monday. He had two strikeouts in one inning Thursday in his only appearance at Indianapolis.

Overton was 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 21 games, including seven starts, with Triple-A Buffalo before making his major league debut with the Blue Jays on Aug. 12. He had four scoreless appearances, allowing four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment on Sept. 3.

Shelton said the Pirates plan to keep a six-man starting rotation, with Wil Crowe, Bryse Wilson, Dillon Peters and Mitch Keller scheduled to start the next four games. JT Brubaker (right shoulder inflammation) is eligible to come off the 10-day IL on Wednesday. The Pirates have yet to announce a starting pitcher for Thursday’s game against Cincinnati.

“I would be hard-pressed regardless of what happens the rest of the year to see us go to a five-man (rotation),” Shelton said. “I mean, we’ve been pretty diligent with staying with the six-man just for health and workload concerns, and I do not see us going back. It may be like one rotation through if we had to, but I don’t see us going back to that.”
