Pirates farm report for July 1, 2021: Cal Mitchell homers twice for Altoona

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 27-23) beat Iowa (Cubs), 7-6, in 12 innings. 1B Christian Bethancourt went 3 for 5 and hit a two-run single in the bottom of the 12th for the decisive runs. RF Bligh Madris went 3 for 4 with two walks and an RBI. 3B Kevin Kramer went 2 for 6 with a double and an RBI. SS Cole Tucker went 1 for 6 with a double and two runs scored. RHP James Marvel started and went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Nick Mears worked the 11th and 12th, allowing one run, to earn the win and improve to 2-2.

Next: Friday vs. Iowa (Cubs), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 28-20) shellacked Hartford (Rockies), 15-7, in the completion of a game suspended by rain Wednesday. Thursday’s regularly scheduled game was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at 4:05 p.m. Saturday. The Curve hit three home runs in the fifth inning. RF Cal Mitchell went 3 for 5 with two home runs, running his season total to eight, and four RBIs. SS Oneil Cruz went 1 for 4 with his ninth homer, a three-run shot. 3B Rodolfo Castro went 2 for 5 and blasted his 10th long ball. LF Canaan Smith-Njigba went 2 for 6 with two RBIs. DH Brendt Citta went 2 for 5 and drove in a pair.

Next: Friday at Hartford (Rockies), 7:05 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High A, 29-22) handled Bowling Green (Rays), 7-3. 1B Will Matthiessen went 3 for 5 with his second home run, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. 3B Andres Alvarez, a 2019 22nd-round pick out of Washington State playing his first game in High A, went 4 for 5 with two RBIs. LF Matthew Fraizer went 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI. RHP Steven Jennings pitched four hitless innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-0. RHP Braxton Ashcraft started and went four innings, surrendering three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Next: Friday at Bowling Green (Rays), 7:35 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low A, 34-16) blanked Fort Myers (Twins) as three pitchers combined on a two-hitter. RHP Santiago Florez started and went six innings, allowing one hit and fanning seven. He’s 5-1 with a 1.32 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. RHP Parker Brahms pitched two innings of one-hit relief, whiffing two. RHP Enmanuel Mejia pitched the ninth for his fourth save. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 13 innings this season. 3B Ernny Ordonez went 1 for 2 with a triple and a sacrifice fly that produced the game’s only run in the third. 2B Maikol Escotto went 0 for 1 with three walks and a run scored. SS Dariel Lopez went 2 for 4.
