The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed relief pitcher Chase Shugart from the Red Sox on Friday.

In exchange, the Pirates sent fellow righty Matt McShane to Boston.

Shugart, 28, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Jan. 15.

Last year, he made his MLB debut with Boston, appearing in six games with a 4.15 ERA and one save over 8 2/3 innings.

He spent the majority of last season with the Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate.

In 36 games (five starts), he was 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA, striking out 80 with 32 walks over 70 2/3 innings.

He spent the entire 2023 campaign in Triple-A, going 4-1 with an 8.22 ERA in 40 games.

Shugart was selected by Boston in the 12th round (No. 370 overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Texas.

Over parts of six minor-league seasons, he has pitched in 163 games, making 50 starts, with a 27-19 record and 4.68 ERA.

McShane, 22, has yet to make his professional debut. The Pirates drafted him in the 13th round (No. 384 overall) in 2024 out of St. Joseph’s.
