Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate Club athletes compete at national championships

Ten athletes from the Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate Club in Levelgreen competed at the USA National Karate Championships and Team USA Trials Sept. 1-5, in Chicago, Ill.

Team PSKC earned 38 medals — 18 Gold, eight Silver and 12 Bronze.

The team was coached by Dustin Baldis, a USA national team coach, and Chad Eagan out of California.

PSKC had three local athletes make Team USA in Kumite. Jared Smith took silver after losing a tough match to Tom Scott, who competed at the Tokyo Olympics. Riley Smith and Zach Kushnir both won gold in the 18-20 division during the Junior Team USA Kumite Trials.

Also, winning the national championship in synchronized team kata were the Kinol family. This was the second national title in a row for Mila, Santino and Cristiano. Other local standouts were Alejandro Voisin, who won gold in Kata and bronze in Kumite. Also, Kyle Campbell earned silver in Kumite and bronze in Kata, and Ryan Starr won a bronze in Kumite.
