Penn-Trafford alum Logan Sherwin from Chicago qualified for the NCAA meet.

Penn-Trafford alum and University of Chicago freshman diver Logan Sherwin looked on the bright side after this month’s NCAA Division III championship meet was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m just thankful I am not a senior,” he said. “I still have three more years to try and compete.”

Sherwin placed second on the 3-meter board with 469.30 points for 11 dives and fourth on the 1-meter (431.90) in February’s Region 1 championship. He was one of eight competitors from the region and one of 24 from all four regions to advance.

He was seeded sixth on both boards, putting him in All-America position.

“I was disappointed the meet was canceled, but I think it was the safest option,” said Sherwin, last season’s WPIAL Class AAA boys 1-meter runner-up. “I am unsure when I will compete again, but I intend to train again as soon as it is safe and continue to improve for next season.

“I am trying to stay focused on what is most important and not worry about everything going on in the world.”

Maroon coach Becky Benson expects Sherwin to come back stronger.

“I believe he will learn harder dives to add to his list,” she said. “I am also looking for him to become the leader I know he is.”
