Penn-Trafford graduate Price is 'special talent' for Pitt-Greensburg tennis
Penn-Trafford graduate Turner Price is turning heads as a freshman on the Pitt-Greensburg men’s tennis team.
Price was 6-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference heading into the final regular-season match April 13.
He was named the conference’s Player of the Week on April 1 after going 4-0 in the top singles and doubles positions.
Overall, he was 10-3 in singles and 6-7 in doubles.
“I have not seen a freshman come in for any team with as much maturity to their game as Turner has,” Pitt-Greensburg coach Doug Smeltzer said. “I knew from Day 1 that he was a special talent, but the work he continues to put in day in and day out has helped him quickly become one of the most complete players in our conference.
“I’d love to see him win conference player of the year this season. He and I sat down at the beginning of the year to look at what he needed to do to beat some of the front-runners and, to this point, he has executed perfectly.”
Price, a Penn resident, said finishing undefeated in the conference would be a huge accomplishment.
The conference championship tournament will be April 27-28 in Erie.
“My goal is to keep earning wins in singles and doubles to help put our team in a position to win matches,” he said.
Smeltzer said Price is a role model for the Bobcats (2-11, 1-5).
“Our team is in a bit of a rebuilding state,” Smeltzer said. “Seeing the way Turner works has helped motivate his teammates and has helped us become more competitive.
“Turner’s skill and desire have made him incredibly valuable to our program.”
Price, a two-time WPIAL Section 1-AAA singles champion and two-time section doubles champion, said being named player of the week was a surprise.
“It’s up there as one of my favorites because it is my first college award,” said Price, who plans to study management. “There are a lot of talented players at this level.
“This award has motivated me to try to earn some higher honors as I continue my college career.”
