The Penguins will face the New York Islanders in the first round of the postseason.

A schedule has yet to be announced.

This matchup was set as a result of the Boston Bruins defeating the Islanders, 3-2, in overtime at TD Garden in Boston on Monday.

The Penguins, who finished in first place of the East Division, were 6-2-0 against the fourth-place Islanders this season, with two of their wins coming beyond regulation.

All-time, the long-time divisional rivals have met in the postseason five times with the Penguins winning only one of those series (2013).

The Islanders have claimed postseason series victories against the Penguins in 1975, 1982, 1993 and 2019.

In the other East Division matchup, the second-seeded Washington Capitals will face the third-seeded Bruins.
