The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goaltender Maxime Lagace from their taxi squad on an emergency basis. He will serve as backup to starting Tristan Jarry for Sunday’s home game against the Washington Capitals.
No reason for the transaction or the status of regular backup Casey DeSmith was provided by the team.
Lagace is in his first year with the organization. The team signed him as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason to a one-year two-way deal worth $700,000.
The 28-year-old spent last season with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. In 33 games, he had a 22-7-3 record along with a 2.37 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and five shutouts.
Lagace’s last NHL action came in the form of a single game with the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2018-19 season.
