The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forwards Vinnie Hinostroza and Radim Zohorna from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League and assigned forward Corey Andonovski to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Thursday morning.
These maneuvers come less than 24 hours after Andonovski was summoned from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Zohorna was sent to the AHL affiliate in a set of paper transactions aimed toward benefiting the team’s daily maintenance of the salary cap.
Hinostroza, 29, is signed to a one-year contract that carries a salary cap hit of $775,000. A free agent signing this past offseason, Hinostroza cleared waivers and was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Oct. 9. In five AHL games this season, the right-handed Hinostroza leads Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in scoring with four points (two goals, two assists).
Zohorna, 27, has been shuffled between the NHL and AHL rosters on four separate occasions since Oct. 9. In two NHL games this season — primarily skating on the third line — the left-handed Zohorna has one goal while averaging 11:10 of ice time per contest.
Andonovski, 24, was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sept. 25 and in three AHL games this season, he has one assist.
A right-handed shot, Andonovski is in the second year of a two-year contract that carries a salary cap hit of $925,000. He does not require waivers to be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
This entire rigmarole follows backup goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic being placed on long-term injured reserve on Wednesday, according to Cap Friendly. Nedeljkovic suffered an undisclosed ailment during a 4-1 home loss to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
Players on long-term injured reserve must be sidelined for a combination of 10 games and 24 days on the NHL calendar. For Nedeljkovic, that means the soonest he may return to the lineup would be a home contest against the Vegas Golden Knights on Nov. 19.
According to Cap Friendly, the Penguins now have $15,286 of salary cap space following Thursday’s transactions.
