Penguins have had their share of blowout losses this season
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 6-1 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday was one of their worst of the season.
In fact, only two other defeats this season were by a wider goal margin.
Through their first 73 games of the season, the Penguins have lost seven games by a margin of five or more goals.
Oct. 9 — New York Rangers 6, Penguins 0
In the season opener at PPG Paints Arena, Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry allowed a goal on the first shot he faced — to Rangers forward Sam Carrick at 2:24 of the first period — and established a common theme for a team that has given up a goal on the first shot 13 times during the 2024-25 campaign.
Nov. 7 — Dallas Stars 7, Penguins 1
For the first time in franchise history, the Penguins allowed six goals in the first period of a contest. Rookie goaltender Joel Blomqvist was pulled after only 10:16 of ice time after he allowed three goals on eight shots at home.
Nov. 23 — Utah Hockey Club 6, Penguins 1
In the first-ever contest between these two franchises, Penguins forward Sidney Crosby scored his 600th career goal in front of home fans. But the celebrations were limited as the Penguins lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
Jan. 11 — Ottawa Senators 5, Penguins 0
Another first shot/first goal saw Senators defenseman Tyler Kleven open the scoring 3:16 into regulation at PPG Paints Arena. Goaltender Leevi Merilainen made 29 saves in his first career shutout.
Feb. 22 — Washington Capitals 8, Penguins 3
In the Penguins’ first game after the break for the 4 Nations Face-Off exhibition tournament, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic lasted 34:25 in this contest after he allowed five goals on only 14 shots at PPG Paints Arena.
Feb. 25 — Philadelphia Flyers 6, Penguins 1
At Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, Nedeljkovic allowed a goal on the first shot — to defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen — 3:56 into regulation, and the Penguins never got on track.
March 25 — Lightning 6, Penguins 1
At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., the Lightning scored the first six goals of the contest. Jarry was pulled after 16 minutes of ice time as he allowed four goals only seven shots.
