Pittsburgh Penguins forward Vinnie Hinostorza cleared waivers Saturday and remains on the club’s NHL roster for the time being.

With Hinostroza having gone unclaimed on waivers, the Penguins are free to assign him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL).

A right-handed shot, Hinostroza has been used in a variety of roles this season, including on both power play units.

In 12 NHL games this campaign, Hinostroza has scored three points (one goal, two assists) while averaging 10:03 of ice time per contest.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hinostroza has played in five games and has posted four points (two goals, two assists).

Capable of playing either wing, Hinostroza is signed to a one-year contract worth $775,000.

Forward Rickard Rakell remains designated to long-term injured reserve, though he is eligible to rejoin the active roster Saturday.

Note: Per the NHL’s media Web site, forward Bryan Rust is now listed as being on injured reserve. He has missed the past three games due to an undisclosed ailment and is expected to be sidelined on a “week-to-week” basis according to coach Mike Sullivan. … In a corresponding transaction, Chad Ruhwedel has been activated from injured reserve. He has missed the past 11 games due to an undisclosed ailment.
