Pittsburgh Penguins forward Alex Nylander will join Sweden’s national team for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Championship tournament next month.
The Swedish Ice Hockey Association announced Nylander’s status — and several other players’ — Wednesday via a release.
Nylander, 25, made his Penguins debut this past season appearing in nine NHL games and scoring two points (one goal, one assist) while averaging 12 minutes, 18 seconds of ice time.
With the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League this past season, Nylander was the team’s lone representative during that league’s All-Star game event and scored 50 points, including a team-best 25 goals, in 55 games.
Nylander has represented Sweden on the international stage multiple times, but this is the first time he has been selected for the men’s national team. His most recent international competition was in the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship tournament, in which he won a silver medal.
