Penguins Elite alum nets winner to send Penn State to 1st Frozen Four

Penn State is headed to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history after the Nittany Lions defeated UConn, 3-2 in overtime, in the Allentown Regional Final at the PPL Center on Sunday night.

Sophomore Matt DiMarsico scored the game-winner with just over two minutes left in overtime as the No. 12 Nittany Lions advanced. The goal was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10.

DiMarsico is a Pittsburgh Penguins Elite alum who attended North Allegheny and North Catholic.

Penn State (22-13-4) will play Boston (23-13-2), a 3-2 overtime winner over Cornell, in the national semifinal at 8:30 p.m. April 10 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Denver (31-11-1) will play Western Michigan (32-7-1) in the other semifinal game at 5 p.m. April 10.

Sophomore Dane Dowiak, another Penguins Elite alum, and JJ Wiebusch scored in regulation for Penn State. Arsenii Sergeev made 42 saves to earn the win.

Joey Muldowney and Tabor Heaslip scored for UConn (23-12-4).
