The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned forwards Andreas Johnsson, Joona Koppanen and Alex Nylander to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Friday.
All three went unclaimed after being placed on waivers Thursday.
Last season, Nylander appeared in nine NHL games and scored two points (one goal, one assist) for the Penguins. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Nylander was selected as an AHL All-Star in 2022-23 by posting 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 55 games.
The 25-year-old right-hander entered this past offseason as a restricted free agent and re-signed with the team, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $775,000.
This preseason, Nylander has appeared in three games and has scored one goal while recording nine shots.
Johnsson, 28, played in three games this preseason and has no points with four shots. A left-handed shot, Johnsson signed a one-year contract with the Penguins this past offseason that carries a salary cap hit of $800,000.
Koppanen, 25, joined the Penguins this past offseason, agreeing to a two-year contract that carries a salary cap hit of $775,000. The first-year of the deal is a two-way contract while the second year is one way.
In three games this season, Koppanen, a left-hander, has no points and one shot.
Following these transactions, the Penguins now have 28 players remaining on their training camp roster, not including four injured players.
The NHL’s deadline to submit a season-opening roster — with a limit of 23 healthy players — is 5 p.m. Monday.
